Election Commission (EC) chairperson Mohd Hashim Abdullah warns parties in the twin by-elections against putting up provocative billboards.

“There were reports of the installation of campaign materials in the form of billboards that contained allegations with the intention to cause ill feelings and is provocative in nature against a party to influence voters in Sungai Besar.
“This action is irresponsible and goes against campaigning ethics as set up in the Election Offences Act 1954,” he says in a statement.
He adds that the EC’s enforcement officers will take the necessary actions to ensure that the rules are complied with.
He says Section 4A of the Election Offences Act 1954 makes it an offence to spread ill feelings and hostility and carries a jail term of up to five years, a fine of up to RM10,000 or both
